When you start looking for a helper in Singapore, you will quickly hit a fork in the road: go through a licensed maid agency, or hire directly yourself. Both are legal and both can work well, but they suit different people. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose with confidence.
What each option actually means
Hiring through an agency means a MOM-licensed agency sources candidates, helps with interviews, and manages the paperwork, Work Permit application, insurance arrangements and arrival logistics for you.
Direct hire means you find the helper yourself, often someone already known to your family or a friend’s helper being transferred, and you handle most of the administrative steps directly with MOM.
Cost: cheaper upfront is not always cheaper overall
Direct hire usually looks cheaper because you skip agency service fees. But the costs that are fixed by regulation do not disappear, whichever route you take. You will still need to budget for:
- The $5,000 security bond (waived for Malaysian helpers).
- Mandatory medical and personal accident insurance.
- The monthly FDW levy, with a concessionary rate possible for eligible families.
- Medical check-ups, including the 6-monthly medical exam (6ME).
With direct hire you save service fees but spend far more of your own time, and you carry more of the risk if something goes wrong. Levy and other figures can change, so always check MOM for the latest.
Effort and paperwork
This is where agencies earn their keep. As a first-time employer, you must complete the Employers’ Orientation Programme (EOP), and your helper may need the Settling-In Programme (SIP). On top of that there are Work Permit forms, insurance, bond, medical bookings and arrival arrangements. An agency coordinates all of this; with direct hire, it is on you.
Replacement and support if things do not work out
Even with careful matching, sometimes a placement simply is not the right fit. A reputable agency typically offers a replacement arrangement within an agreed period and acts as a neutral party to help resolve misunderstandings. With direct hire, there is no such safety net, and you manage any disputes on your own.
Ask yourself one honest question: if the placement does not work out in the first few months, do you want to restart the whole process alone, or have an agency help you find a replacement? Your answer often points to the right choice.
When direct hire makes sense
Direct hire can be a good fit when:
- You already know the helper well and trust her work, for example a returning helper or a transfer from a family you know.
- You are confident handling MOM procedures and have time to manage them.
- You do not need help with shortlisting or interviewing.
When an agency makes sense
An agency is usually the better choice when:
- This is your first time hiring and you want guidance through EOP, the Work Permit and arrival.
- You are sourcing from overseas and need help vetting candidates.
- You value a replacement option and a neutral party for support.
