Rest days are one of the most common questions we hear from families employing a helper for the first time, and rightly so. A well-rested helper is a happier, safer and more attentive one, and getting rest days right is both a legal duty and simply the kind thing to do. Here is a clear, reassuring guide to what Singapore law requires and how to manage rest days in a way that works for your household.

The basic rule: a weekly rest day

Under the Employment of Foreign Manpower rules, your helper is entitled to a rest day every week. A rest day means a full day off, and the day can be agreed between the two of you, it does not have to be a Sunday. Many families and helpers settle on a regular day that suits everyone’s routine, which makes planning the week far easier.

What changed on 1 January 2023

An important update came into effect on 1 January 2023. From that date, your helper must be given at least one rest day each month that cannot be compensated away. In other words, she is entitled to take at least one actual day of rest every month, and this particular day cannot be swapped for pay. It is there to protect her wellbeing and ensure genuine time to rest, regardless of how busy the household is.

The key compliance point since 1 January 2023: at least one rest day per month must be taken as an actual day off and cannot be compensated. Other rest days in the month may be compensated by mutual agreement, at not less than one day’s salary.

The other rest days: compensation by agreement

For the remaining rest days in a month, there is flexibility. If both you and your helper agree, she may work on a rest day in exchange for compensation. That compensation must be at least one day’s salary for the day worked. This should always be by genuine mutual agreement, never something imposed, and it should be the exception rather than the everyday norm. A helper who never gets a real break will, understandably, struggle over time.

Putting it into practice

The smoothest households tend to plan ahead rather than decide week by week. A few simple habits go a long way:

  • Agree a regular rest day together at the start, and put it in writing in or alongside the employment contract.
  • Protect at least one genuine day off every month, in line with the 2023 rule.
  • If you ever need her to work a rest day, discuss it in advance and agree the compensation fairly.
  • Keep a simple record of rest days taken and any compensated days, so there is never confusion.

Making rest days meaningful

Beyond the letter of the law, a little thoughtfulness helps. Talk with your helper about how she likes to spend her day off, whether that is meeting friends, attending her place of worship, or simply resting at home. Respecting that time builds trust, and trust is the foundation of a long, positive working relationship. If she chooses to stay home on her rest day, she should still be genuinely free from her duties.
