One of the first questions many Singapore families ask is which nationality of helper to hire. It is a fair question, but the honest answer is that there is no “best” nationality. Every helper is an individual, and a caring, capable helper can come from any country. What we can share are some general tendencies around language, food familiarity and experience, so you can match a helper to your household’s needs rather than rank people as better or worse.

The main source countries

Most Migrant Domestic Workers (MDWs) in Singapore come from three countries, with a few others adding to the mix:

  • The Philippines — a long-established source, with many experienced helpers.
  • Indonesia — also very common, with a strong tradition of household and caregiving work.
  • Myanmar — a growing source in recent years.
  • Others — some families also consider helpers from Sri Lanka or India.

General tendencies (not rules)

Please read the table below as broad tendencies, not guarantees. You will meet quiet Filipino helpers and chatty Myanmar helpers, first-timers and veterans, in every group.

Area Filipino helpers Indonesian helpers Myanmar helpers
English Often strongest on average; useful for tutoring children Varies; many speak conversational English, some more Malay Varies; English may be more basic, improves with time
Cuisine familiarity Comfortable with varied and Western dishes Often familiar with Malay and halal cooking Comfortable with Asian home cooking; can learn local dishes
Common strengths Childcare, communication Caregiving, household routines Patient, eager to learn

Language and your household

If you need a helper to read instructions, help children with homework or speak with elderly family members in English, English proficiency matters. It tends to be strongest among Filipino helpers generally, but plenty of Indonesian and Myanmar helpers communicate well too — and many families value a helper who shares the household’s home language or dietary habits.

Food and culture

If your home is halal, an Indonesian or Myanmar helper familiar with halal cooking may settle in faster. If you cook a wide range of cuisines, look for a helper with the right experience, whatever her nationality.

Tip: Decide your top two priorities first — for example “good English for the kids” plus “comfortable with elderly care” — then look for the individual helper who fits, rather than starting from a country.

What matters more than nationality

In our experience, the things that predict a happy placement are rarely about the passport:

  • Relevant experience (infant care, elderly care, cooking, pets).
  • Attitude and willingness to learn.
  • A realistic job scope that matches her abilities.
  • Clear, kind communication from you as the employer.

A note on salary and fees

Expected salary norms can differ by nationality and experience, and agency fees vary too. Rather than quote figures that change, we suggest you ask us for the current ranges and check MOM’s website for the latest official guidance before you decide.
